Coney Island’s Freaktoberfest

Coney Island’s brewery is out of New York (Shmaltz Brewing Company) and is one of the few east coast craft breweries that makes it all the way to Arizona. The bottle has excellent artwork and really stands out on the shelf when you walk by.

The Coney Island brewery donates a portion of their profits to a foundation that helps keep Coney Islands historical landmark maintained.

The beer is 6.66% alcohol seasonal beer with 5 different hops and 5 different types of malts. The beer pours an unnatural red color to really stand true to the name. I’ve never seen a beer this red that wasn’t a framboise.

It has a very sweet sugar flavor with a nice wave of hops. I would probably classify this as an OctoberIPAfest. If you like the sweet beers that are full of hops, this may be your new favorite.

Hi guys. This is Zak Davis from Shmaltz Brewing Company, the makers of the Coney Island Craft Lagers. Just wanted to stop in and say thanks so much for the writeup on the Freaktoberfest. Even though some of the beer rating website list it as an Oktoberfest, it’s actually not an Oktoberfest style at all (as you guys noticed). Since most of our beers hybridize multiple styles, their usually miscategorized on those websites. This year, we brewed the beer with an Oktoberfest-style malt bill, but an IPA-style hop bill, which accounts for the exaggerated hop presence. Because we release this beer more for the Halloween season than for Oktoberfest, we’ve found an organic zombie farmer in Northern California that supplies us with the zombie blood to achieve the demonic color. It’s easy for the color to throw off people’s mental perception of the taste, but once you get past that quality, we think that Freaktoberfest is a deliciously drinkable brew. Thanks again for the support and hope you all have a happy and healthy new year. ~Zak
